Hirsuitism
What is Hirsuitism?
An excessive male pattern hair growth in females (i.e hair occurring in areas where it is usually absent / minimal like face). The hair appears dark and thick.
Why does it occur?
Hirsuitism can be familial (hereditary) or can occur due to underlying disorders like PCOS (insulin resistance), hormonal imbalances (thyroid disorders), certain drugs (phenytoin).
How can hirsuitism be managed?
‘A proper clinical examination coupled with appropriate blood investigations.’
A diet plan, lifestyle modifications and oral medicines are essential if there are signs of hormonal or metabolic disturbances.
Topical eflornithine creams – though not efficacious by itself, can be given simultaneously in patients undergoing laser hair reduction.
Laser Hair Reduction (LHR) – the most efficacious treatment that exists for hair reduction. One should remember that it is a method for permanent hair reduction and not removal. The laser used here, is targeted at the hair follicles and stunts them, thereby giving the result. With the latest technologies, pain is very negligible to none, when performed by trained personnel.
*The number of sessions for LHR is not fixed as it depends on the area being treated, and the associated underlying factors.
