Nail
Quite often we come across changes on the nail plate (which is the ‘nail’ that we commonly refer to!). Listed below are a few conditions that affect the nail :
Infections
This sometimes manifests as pain in the nail folds (which is the skin surrounding the nail). It could be caused by a fungus and/or bacteria (in long-standing cases). Prompt diagnosis and treatment with appropriate medications to treat the infection will bring an appreciable difference with respect to the symptoms.
Skin Diseases
Different parts of the nail apparatus can be affected or can indicate a skin disease. A number of people affected with psoriasis, lichen planus, eczemas, alopecia may also notice changes over their nails. In these conditions, the nails may show splitting, pitting, ridge formations etc., and they may also indicate the prognosis of the particular skin condition. The difficulty in catching these changes quite early arises from the fact that, people often tend to visit salons to rectify their nail related issues rather than visiting their dermatologist. A detailed clinical assessment and management by applicatory and/or oral medications will help to maintain the integrity of the nail.
Damage Due to Chemicals
As much as most women love their nails to be painted, long term or frequent use of these nail paints and regular use of false nails bring about a significant damage to the nail structure especially the nail plate. This can lead to discoloured and brittle nails and might take a long time for the nail to recover by itself. Do visit your dermatologist to assess the nails and provide adequate treatment and bring out the shine back on your nails!
Underlying Medical Conditions
Our nails can act as a mirror, by reflecting the health of our internal system. They can show significant changes and sometimes can often be the first sign to diagnose an underlying condition. Kidney and liver diseases, low albumin levels, lung disorders like bronchitis etc., can cause numerous nail changes. These require prompt management.
Ingrown Nails
A frequent, but often neglected problem. We have patients coming in only when the problem becomes severe. The recommended treatment is removal of the nail plate. Apart from this, proper care while cutting / trimming the nails is very essential.
At Skeptre, all these nail conditions and/or diseases are frequently treated with appropriate medications and treatments, customised for each patient.
